| ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY |
- Saint Margaret Mercy - in a joint venture with its sister hospitals in the Northern Indiana Region - introduced the latest in PET technology. The Siemens Accel Positron Emission Tomography (PET) system is one of only three of its kind in the United States. PET is a medical imaging procedure that provides physicians with information about the body's chemistry, cell function and location of disease - information that enhances CT, MRI, X-ray or physical examination. PET technology is used as a diagnostic tool for cancer and neurological disorders.
- Saint Margaret Mercy offers linear accelerator-based stereotactic radiosurgery, a noninvasive technique that delivers a single, precise dose of radiation to a targeted brain tumor, while limiting the dose to surrounding healthy brain tissue to clinically insignificant levels.
- Saint Margaret Mercy's North Campus is home to the first dual-chamber hyperbaric oxygen chamber in the Calumet area. The state-of-the-art MSI i2010 Hyperbaric System administers oxygen to a patient at greater than normal pressure to treat specific medical indications. It has proven effective in treating problem wounds, chronic bone infection, radiation injury, and compromised skin grafts.
