Letter to the Community

Gene Diamond
Regional Chief Executive Officer Northern Indiana

The hospitals that make up Sisters of St. Francis Health Services Northern Indiana Region hear the message loud and clear when it comes to answering the call of Continuing Christ’s Ministry In Our Franciscan Tradition.

Our Community Benefit efforts accomplish that in any number of ways every day, but, most importantly, they do so by showing our adherence to Christ’s example of providing compassionate care to anyone who needs it, regardless of their ability to pay.

Last year alone, our hospitals together provided nearly $130 million in uncompensated care, community education and provision of essential services to the needy.

And quality services they were; in fact, they were among the nation’s best. Here are some of the examples as evidenced by the latest survey results compiled by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent health care ratings organization:

* Saint Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point is 5-Star rated for stroke treatment for eight consecutive years, 5-Star rated for hip fracture repair for three straight years, ranked among the top 5 in Indiana for orthopedic services and ranked among the top 5 percent nationwide for patient safety excellence in 2009.

* Saint Margaret Mercy hospitals in Hammond and Dyer are among the top 5 percent for overall pulmonary services and among the top 10 percent nationwide for cardiac surgery. The Hammond campus was recognized as Best in the Gary Region and the only Specialty Excellence Award recipient for cardiac surgery. The Dyer campus was ranked among the top 10 in Indiana for cardiology services and is a two-time recipient of the Pulmonary Specialty Excellence Award for 2009-10.

* Saint Anthony Memorial in Michigan City is a 2010 recipient of HealthGrades’ Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award and the only area hospital to notch the 2010 Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award. It also received other top honors for its gastrointestinal surgery and cholecystectomy services.

Thank you for taking the time to review this report and rest assured that the SSFHS Northern Indiana Region hospitals are unwavering when it comes to serving their patients and those less fortunate.

Our tradition of high quality and compassionate care is rooted in our mission and Franciscan Values forever sustained by our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, and we are committed to continuing this legacy for years to come.

Sincerely,

Gene Diamond
